The Poetica Dramatica Project

Students perform "Homage To My Hips" by Lucille Clifton

Over the course of 17 classes students read over 50 poems, form precision poetry drill teams and choose poems to re-arrange, memorize, choreograph, and perform. Teams incorporate solos, unison lines, body strikes, choreography, dynamics, and tempo changes. This is more than a poetry reading. Teams transform their poems into performance pieces. It's more like a concert than a reading: loud, energized teams perform poetry with a focus on the sound and rhythm of their pieces. The essential question for the project is: How can analyzing and remixing poetry lead to a better understanding of self and society?
